so my xj is new to me and i have been fixing it up, i bought it from the dad of the son who built it and he knew nothing about what it had, so i keep finding out things, what is normal rpms for everyone else. i have 35's and 65mph is around 2.5 to 2.8k rpm, i know it has a d35. has it been geared down?, runs great around town and feels super torquey under 15 mph, but on the freeway i feel like i am pushing the motor at those rpms lol

If the speedo gear is correct for your size tire, you are geared down. I would pull the speedo gear and see how many teeth it is

edit: when you are on the freeway at that speed at those RPMs, is that in the "Drive" position and with the transmission in overdrive? (this is assuming you have an auto tranny since you didnt specify)

This. Mine doesn't have overdrive and has factory 4:10 gearing and turns the same rpm's as yours. If you're lifted, a taller tire would calm it down some.

And to the question of the hour, is it in overdrive? If so, it has been re-geared.

I'd pull the diff covers and count the teeth in the ring and pinion front and rear. And I would definitely do this before ever putting it in 4x4. You definitely sound like you're regeared though. Cause if you werent and you were on 3.55s going 65 in OD, you'd be sitting well below 2k RPMs
