Rear d44
So I found a rear d44 for a xj with 4.56 gears and a Detroit locker. Guy says it needs brake work and gears were done not to long ago. He's asking 350$ worth it? I have a 8.8 with 4.10 I was gonna build but if this 44 has gears and a locker and it bolts in with non c clip only thing I'd buy is disc brakes. With it or what should we look for with the axle concerns and stuff

At $350 you should have bought it yesterday.
Only you will know condition.....being there......
Edit to say........D44s are overrated IMO......but that's just me.
They are in demand and you could easily double your money if in excellent condition.

As for overrated, I feel the same way about the 8.8". I've grenaded the carriers in quite a few 8.8's. But then again I had V8 engines with 33-35" tires.

i prefer the 44
the 8.8 is a popular swap in a tj. but since some xj's came with a 44, it's a no brainer.

How many XJ 44s do you see in the jy? How many Explorer 8.8's do you see?
My point being, if you break something & need parts, which are easier to find?
You already have the 8.8. The carriers are a know weak link, just replace it with a full case locker.
XJ 44s are overrated & scarce.

it was a win win, but these deals has to happen quickly. you snooze, you lose as they say.
now you're stuck with a c-clip axle unless you can find another d44 or go with a different manufacturers option. but this will require some welding at the very least.
i have a couple spare xj44's that i found in junkyards that i will be building and putting in my other xj's. there are a bunch still around. i look under every renix jeep both xj and mj to see if it has a 44. mj however is set up differently and would have to have welding done for shock mounts and spring perches.
i already have a completely stock one in my 90 with a lock rite, been running 36 inch bias iroks on beadlocks for many years with no breaking of shafts. and i like being hard on it at times, both on the street and trails.
