Spartan Locker Review
here is my take on the Spartan locker. I'll start off with the price I payed for it $370.00 shipped. I have the 29spine 8.25 rear, at first I was going to go with the allusive Aussie, but after waiting and waiting for the endless backorder to end I gave up. which left me with either going a full carrier locker or my choice between lockrite and spartan. at over $100.00 more for the lockrite, I voted with my wallet and chose the Spartan. I read many reviews, it seemed the most common complaint was the noise. I drive an XJ so I'm more then used to my rig talking to me when it's in operation. installation; it took me all of 45 minutes to install it. in my opinion the instructions could use a few more details (mainly dealing with the C-clips) but were easy enough to understand that anyone who has ever pulled an axle could easily accomplish this on their own. the other issue with the instructions was the lack of clarification to removing the side gear thrust washers, if I hadn't read up on this online that the side gear thrust washers are not reused I could have assumed they were and wasted time during the install. Operation; on the street during normal driving conditions the Spartan is hardly noticeable. there is a slight feeling of understeer on long corners, and tight corners result in the "clicking" noise or "tire bark" depending on driver throttle control either way it's not an issue. offroad is where the Spartan shines. I have been able to climb over things locked that were impossible before, and things that were a challenge have become noticeably easier to navigate. for anyone on a budget it doesn't get better then this!

I'm really sold on it. there is another"high point" of the Spartan. included is a hardened crosspin and new retaining bolt, other units I've look at do not include them. I'm going to be ordering one for the 27spline 8.25 for my wifes XJ and 2 for the Dana30 HP for both as more funds come in. after going wheeling today I'll never own another unlocked 4x4 again.

and good review (but your point about the crosspin is pointless as they never break), i've had both spartan and aussie. they both make the same amount of noise imo. both quality lockers and work great on the trail.

The Spartan is the 3rd Brand Lunchbox Locker I have used in my Rigs,
I had Lockrite's in my TJ, An Aussie in my YJ and now a Spartan in the XJ. I like the Spartan the best. The Pins are the largest and it was the easiest to install.
I have step by step pics of my Spartan install in my XJ in my build thread !
I also was able to do a Offcamber waterfall that I could not do before. I followed a Yota up the waterfall an had less issues than him an he was on 37's with open diffs

$370? Ouch...

Edit: I see the 8.25's are way higher for whatever reason...

I've seen a crosspin on a dana44 break in half, although there were other factors that caused this. I bent a crosspin on a dana 35 when I had a genuine gear quick lock that failed. in both cases there was another factor involved the caused the damage to the crosspin, but I see a hardened crosspin as a plus and the fact that it is included with the locker I thought it was worth mentioning.

Funny you should say that....I just helped a stranded XJ on a trail because his cross pin broke, slid into the ring gear and spider gears and split the differential housing....Dont say cant because anything man-made can

Good thread, I recently put a spartan in my 29 spline 8.25 and love it. I was open before though. I have an Aussie in the front and that thing is way louder than the Spartan is. I dont know if its an age thing or what, but the Aussie was in there when I bought the Jeep, so I have no idea how long its been in there. But I also highly recommend the Spartan. This is my second one. First was in my TJ Rockcrawler.
