My neighbor offered me a home theater sub for a real good price and I'm not sure on how I would hook it up with my current system. It is a 2500w sony with a built in amp. Right now I only have a pioneer head unit and better speakers that replaced the stock ones. The sub only has one input for a wire, not like normal car subs where there are 2, so how could I hook it up? I would also need to get a power inverter to plug in the sub. Can anyone give me advice on doing this? Would it be worth it or should I stick with a normal car sub? I know some people have hooked up home speakers and such, I just don't know how I would go about it.

You'd be better off going with an amp and sub designed to work on 12v. Remember, if the sub you're lookin' at has an amp that peaks at 2500 watts, you'll need a >2500 watt inverter... those aren't cheap.

x2. If you decide to try it out you can either purchase a rca Y adapter that goes from 2 male to 1 male or you can just use one end of a regular rca cable. Subs use a mono signal so you only need to use one end coming into it.

Watts of output from an amp has nothing to do with the inverter required to run it. EXCEPT for the fact that a larger output amplifier DOES require a larger inverter.

Example:
AMPS X VOLTS = WATTS
My Pioneer 120 volt, pushes 200 watts output at 6 amps (home amp)
It needs an inverter 0f 720 watts
My old Realistic amplifier, pushed the same 200 watts but needed 12 amps
It needs an inverter of 1440 watts
The difference here is the amount of power required to make the output!

Lets not EVEN go into pure sinewave inverter................
Beside, you dont really need an inverter anyway, the amplifier is converting 120 volts into something DC, the same DC your jeep runs on (maybe).

I highly doubt it'll take 2500 watts. Sony is notorious for over rating everything they sell. Get a real car sub and amp and dont Mickey mouse it with a home theatre sub. There's a reason it's called HOME theatre.... :shaking head:

Yeah, my neighbor thought it was 2500w, it's really like a 200w or so. But I realized that It's not worth goin through all that just to save a little money. I'd rather have a normal car sub to do the job. I have a 12inch sony, I just need a box and all the goodies to hook it up. I'll let the home theater sub stay in a house. Thanks for the info anyway!

I'm getting a basically new 500w mono from a friend. My sub is a 300w rated 1100w peak and 4 impedance.
