Default Smittybuilt winch bumper, need a unibody tie in kit too?

Hello Everyone,

first post here....I just bought a Smittybuilt winch bumper, and a winch. Before I take the time to install it, I want to make sure I don't have .do any work twice. I think I will go ahead, and get a beefy steering box spacer, but I can't decide if a tie in kit is needed with this bumper. I will be honest, I rarely wheel my XJ, but I don't want to worry about my bumper ripping off while winching.

thanks in advance!

If you don't want to rip your bumper off, then you should absolutely get unibody tie in brackets. Any one of the major manufacturers should work just fine.

The smittybilt bumper comes with brackets that tie into the unibody. The brackets use the steering box bolts to mount so, you might as well upgrade the steering box spacer while you're in there

I am thinking there would be little to gain by adding a separate tie-in kit when the bumper brackets tie into the unibody almost the same way. Would the bumper even fit, if I installed say a JCR unibody tie in kit? V69_XJ, I agree that the steering spacer is worthwhile to upgrade while in there.

thanks

I don't see a need for a separate tie in bracket. I have the same bumper on my xj and have used it for winching/ recovery with no issues.
