Small block to a AW4
OK A friend of mine has a 88 XJ 4d. he threw a rod and has to pull out his 4.0 He has a Rebuilt Chevy 305 motor sitting in his garage. he was wondering if there is a kit to bolt it to a AW4 tranny. Its not going to be for 4 wheeling so its not for any kind of performance upgrade it's just that he has the motor and would like to know if there is a way to bolt it togeather. He only asked me cause i did something similar with a mopar 440 and bolted it to a GM700r4 tranny with the help of a kit from TCI transmissions.

Advance Adapters used to but couldn't find it on their site. They list the 32RE and TF999 which are simular. They have things they make that aren't listed so you can always call. Novak doesn't make one and states it's because it won't hold up to V8 power and is prone to overheating.

From what Ive read, any AMC v8 will bolt up to the aw4.
But why go through the trouble? For the money he would spend on making it work, he could build a nice stroker.

Only because he has a rebuilt 305 just sitting there and figured it there was a tranny adapter to bolt it to there would be no drive shaft mods, transfer case linkage mods. just weld in some mounts. some cable re routing and coolent hoses, some wiring, and brackets. a weekend job. but im sorta glad i think it cant be done cause i'd most likley get roped into doing the job with him.

Have to get rid of the fuel pump in the tank somehow, weld in motor mounts, find a radiator and coolant lines that would work, etc.
And the fact that the aw4 just plain wont work with a smallblock.

toyota supras come with a variation of an aw4 (forget the model number, but its essentially just valve body and a computer differences from what i hear) but those hold up to 400+ horse all day long.
no doubt in my mind an aw4 can handle a mild smallblock. just make sure you can keep it cool.
still wouldnt be my tranny of choice however.

I totally disagree with their idea of the aw4... With a good cooler and keeping up on the maintenance, Im sure it could hold up to a 350.
Look at some of the power people with strokers put through them.

i have personally seen a rig with a chevy 4.3 and an aw4.
the 4.3 shares the same pattern as the chevy smallblock.
not sure how, but its possible.
