Default Which shocks for 3-4” lifted Dd xj?

As the title states I’m looking to see what your opinions are on the best shock for a slightly lofted daily driver xj. The Jeep has a 3” lift currently, and I’m going to be updating the rough country parts that are on it. it’s daily driver and 95% of its time is spent on paved road with the occasional seasonal road fun. There’s no trails or anything near me and I don’t plan on ever wheeling the Jeep hard but maybe someday. I’m mainly looking for a shock that’s good on road without being too stiff but also good off-road. I’m planning on ordering the zone 3” kit with either nitros or hydros or I’m also open to Bilstein 5100’s and zone has the option to upgrade to fox shocks with their lift package as well. Between those 4 what do you guys think would be best? Upgrading to the fox shocks is cheaper overall than ordering bilsteins separate. Are there any other good shocks for the money? Anything that would be THAT much better to make me buy them separate from the zone shocks that come with the kit?

I’ll never get the lift kit manufacturer’s generic, white body shocks again. I put Bilstiens on my ‘89, and will likely put ‘em on my daily as well. Go with the Bilstiens or Fox. Both companies have good reps as shock manufacturers.

I mean obviously the Bilstein or fox are among the best. But I’ve seen some reviews of people saying it can be a harsh ride with gas charged shocks for a dd vehicle so I wasn’t sure. Everyone says hydro shocks ride better for every day but aren’t the greatest for off-road. I don’t want the ride to be uncomfortably stiff. Just comfortable lol

im not unhappy with the OME shocks that are paired with the OME springs and leafs. I def would have gone bilstein 5100s if the kit didn't come with the shocks

thank you for your input. It seems 99% of the time bilsteins are the choice. It just scares me because some have said they’re too stiff

all white body shocks are the same twin tube crap design. get a good set of monotubes, like bilstein, and dont look back.

I’m surprised at that. When researching which shock to buy I can’t say I remember that being a common complaint. I’ve had Bilstiens on my play rig for over a year now. I wouldn’t characterize them as providing a stiff ride. At all. When I get my new ‘91 dd back to the east coast it’s getting Bilstiens.

Get the hydros. The Zone coils are way stiffer than the RC ones you have. Stiffer shocks wont help. Now saying that the Bilsteins, to me anyways, make the ride much more controlled feeling, good dampening but they can be stiff if you get normal valving which most people do. Thats the other thing you can order them with the valving you desire but you would need to figure out what you want.

I vote Bilsteins as well. I run 5100s on my 99 XJ and 5160 reservoirs in the front with 5100s in the back of my 2012 F350, along with dual Bilstein steering stabilizers. I also ran 5100s on my old 2005 F250. I probably won't ever buy anything else.

it seems bilsteins are always the favorite and for good reason I assume. I’m trying to find a way to replace my tired rear leafs and then purchase some new shocks. Rear leafs alone cost almost as much as a new lift so it’s a tough Choice as I don’t need a whole lift but

I just purchased new rear leaf springs for mine as well. Amazon has some incredible prices on Rubicon Express springs. I picked up a set of 4.5” coils for $76 shipped and a pair of 4.5” leaf springs for about $275 shipped. The RE 3.5” leaf springs are under $100 each I believe.

I saw that and it is a smoking deal. But unfortunately I’m at 3” now and the rubicon express springs even at the 3.5 lift people say they get 4.5 to even 5” of lift. I can’t have that lol. I wish I was in the market for them because it’s a crazy good deal

I've also heard great things about Zone and ProComp leaf springs. I believe both companies make a 3" leaf! Good luck!

I had bilstein 4600 HDs on my jeep WK, they were a tad stiff. but I swapped the rears for 5100s and they were great. hell I ran 5100s on my lifted CTD and swore by them. theyre an all around great riding shock, and the price of 4 isn't bank breaking if you ask me.
