Default shock question

will 6 inch lift shocks, 9177 and 9178(rough country) work on an 1990 xj that has been lifted only 3 inches, i want to upgrade it later to a 6 inch lift,i just dont want to have to buy shocks twice , i spoke to a rep from rough country and they said they would work without any problems, but the guy at the local 4x4 shop said they wont work, that they can be damaged when fully compressed.

whats your input on this,thanks
willie

The shocks will b too long so the suspension will bottom out on the shock and blow it. Or the shocks then selves will compress completely b4 the suspension comes close to the bump stops

If u need shocks for ur 3 inch lift. Buy a set of barley used or new shocks of a stock newer wrangler. They work very nice

you could extent your bump stops to protect your (way too long) shocks

are get 3-4" shocks and put 2-3" spacers on them later

The newest u can. Craigslist is great b/c a lot of people buy brand new wranglers, lift them and sell there barley used shocks. Search for jk shocks. And idk the specific year but id say anything in the past couple years. Or find a local fourwheele shop and see of they have any left over from lifts they have done.
U will have to press the little metal bushings out with a vise and some sockets work well.
