Default Shock length..

Anyone running larger than 10 inches of travel for shocks? if so how much lift do you have? trying to get a rough guess on what shocks I want to buy before I go measuring. I will be running about 5.5 inches of lift with 35's

I know the "Team Petty Cash" XJ runs 12" travel Bilsteins on 6" of lift. You might want to check out their build. I know they said they did a lot of work to get that much travel.

I am only looking for a couple inches of uptravel and a lot of drop. Its a dd so I can't run the rear through the floor but I can run the front up into the engine bay. I'm just trying to get something that my shocks aren't going to limit me crazy when I order my 3 link.

I ran 12" travel shocks up front on my last XJ. Dont remember exact collapsed/extended lengths.

Default Shock length..

I'm running 12" up front as well. My lift is probably in the 5" range. I'm running Edelbrock Xtreme Travel shocks for a 6.5" lift.

You can run virtually any shock length if you bumpstop enough. What you really need to do is measure your wheel travel and ride height. Then, look at shocks and their collapsed and extended lengths. I'm running FOX 10" resi's up front and 10" ifps in the rear. I get no where near the travel from the rear as I do the front, thanks to leaf springs and stock shackles. I'm at the 5.5" range with 33s. How much are you really looking to drop? What length brake lines are you running? Are you long arm or short arm?

I am going to measure eventually and I'm going to 3 link long arm the front. about 5.5 inches of lift. 35 inch tires. and I just don't wanna be that guy on the trail with not enough travel to get over an obstical

Well you can't really get correct measurements until you have the lift installed. For 35s you'll need gears at the minimum, possibly a new rear axle if you have a turdyfive.

Don't measure a rigs capability on its travel. I wheeled on stock short arms, the 10" resi's up front and 3" lift kit rough country shocks out back. I was keeping up with my buddy in his LJ rubicon Sahara. I always say wheeling is 90% driver ability and 10% rig. Once you learn to pick good lines, you'll be golden.

I have a 29 spline 8.25 I'm going to regear to 4.88's but thats a whole another thing. I want a good amount of suspension travel and I'm going to measure then. I was just more concerned if I would have to do a lot of major modifications to run 10+ inch travel. If people are running 12 inch travel in the front, what are you running in the rear?

I'm running 10" at all 4 corners. Like I said in my first post, if you bumpstop accordingly, you'll be fine so long as you have some up travel. For your rears, if you are using the stock locations, just measure the same way you do for the front. Like I said, I'm no where near maxing out my rear, but I could if I bought some new shackles that don't lift me up more. I'm actually trying to drop my lift down to about a 4-4.5 because I want a good LCOG build for out here in Cali. But I'll do that once I get coilovers. As you can see in my pictures, I've got decent drop up front and I'm mounted in the shock locations.

4.88s are a little steep for a D30 front ain't they? Why not look for 44s or some decent 3/4 tons to throw under there? Just my $0.02 though.

I had about 3 inches of up travel, maybe a tad more, plenty for anything I came across..
I had about 3-4 inches of extended bumpstop also.

I have been looking for a set of 44s or 3/4 tons but I want to try to keep my jeep somewhat road legal. Its still my DD right now but I am starting a new job soon making real good money so I am going to buy a new dd and build me jeep up. I would really like to be able to run and wheel 37's without breaking axles left and right but I don't think I could do that on a road legal vehicle

I'm sitting at about 5.5" w 35' running 15" shocks



Limit straps because of brake lines. I'm considering either 12-14" shocks when these wear out or lowering my lower mounts. Ive only got about 4" of up travel right now.
