Serious Offroad 1-ton Steering Upgrade or ZJ Steering Upgrade.
Hey guys,
Now that the first phase of my build is completed i am looking to start getting into the second phase. One of the things i want to do is my front steering. I was original going to go with the ZJ set up, that is until i saw the 1-ton kit from Serious Offroad.
Here is my situation. This is more of a cross country type rig, i dont do crazy four wheeling that would necessitate a over the knuckle or anything that requires reaming, drilling, welding, or cutting. This is why i liked the ZJ upgrade. But then i found the Serious Offroad and that is a 1-ton kit that requires no reaming, welding, or cutting.
PROS of the ZJ:
- Cheaper ($156 from autozone for tierod, drag link, and TREs)
- Solid Tie rod
- Seems sufficient for my needs
PROS of Serious Offroad 1-ton
- Its a 1-ton kit
- Stronger then ZJ
- Better geometry???
- No modification needed
CONS of ZJ:
- Its still just a stock set up
- Not sure what else
CONS of Serious Offroad 1-ton:
- Couldnt really find any reviews
- More expensive
- Not sure what else.
What are you guys thoughts?
Thanks
Will

Except for the solid Lower tie rod, the ZJ steering is the same as the XJ.. Same Drag, same TRES. Even then it's only the Rod from a ZJ with a V8.

the serious set up has a one pc tie rod that the drag links pulls and pushes as factory steering does not the draglink pulls up on the tie rod which changes the tow on lifted vechicles

Got it. So it sounds like the Serious Kit is the way to go. My only concern is my stock steering is truely not too bad. I just dont want to screw it up by swapping it out to something new.

Haha i dont know! Call me paranoid. I guess from all the reading i have done the "stock" steering set up already has a screwed up geometry so i guess it can only get better right?
I just want to make sure the new set up is tight, the truck doesnt wander, etc. I know its not a car but i want it to be stable while driving at freeway speeds.

I too had this question and glas you asked it because I want my Cherokee to stop wandering the road! I considered the ZJ one but also see that you didn't mention the one from IRO, but it is more at $350.
After reading the replies I'm guessing it is time to save for the Serious Steering from FrankZ at that great price.

Yeah just an update, i am going with the Serious Steering Upgrade. After speaking with Frank and doing a little research i settled on the Serious Offroad kit. Frank is extremely helpful and patient and i have the utmost confidence in his product.
