Default S10 vs Durango steering box

Yes I searched before posting

I keep reading, through out numerous XJ groups on facebook,(yes facebook ) that a 95+ S10 gear box is better to swap in than the durango box. Now having bought my first XJ this past October, which I soberly totaled on the 4th Im wondering if this is true as I begin to search for my next one and start brainstorming for its build up. Whats the consensus, i know there is alot more knowledge here than there

I have not used a s10 box yet so I cant comment, I personally would not use a Durango box again, they are a bit bigger but the turning radius blows & you have to space it off the uni frame...

Last two times I replaced a box I used a stock zj, the pitman arm is a bit lower so it works out well on a xj & the turning radius is great...They last two years or so on 35's haha.

My cousin has an s10 box in his cherokee. Feels like a normal Cherokees steering box. Maybe a little less wheel turning.

I'm running the S10 box for maybe a year now. It was nice and tight at first. Not so much anymore. Stick with the stock XJ box.

You can't tighten it back up with the adjuster? I was hoping one of them is stronger than the XJ box

I've been running the zr2 from a 01 s10 also a wj pump from a 02 so far no issue's. Actually I love it lol. When the s10 box goes I'm gonna try the j10 box.

Forget the s10 and Durango boxes. Keep the stock one until it's shot. I've heard people trying j10/j20 boxes but there's a ton of wrong info out there.

The tried and true one that I would do is a Saginaw (sp?) box out of a yj. 4 bolt holes instead of 3.

Either that or you could tap the factory box for hydro-assist

they all have noticeable difference, the other boxes are stronger than the stock xj/zj box, but have compromises....

check out the redneck ram if you want a budget alternative to a hydro assist...http://westtexasoffroad.homestead.com/index.html

I simply stated that a zj box & pitman arm is set up better for a lifted jeep because the pitman arm is 1-1.5" lower than the stock xj.... At this point I would just rather buy that box every few years than compromise lock to lock steering or have to deal with a non street legal steering.

I would think the ZJ box would be stronger than the XJ box anyways. Would the ZJ pitman arm fit the XJ box? I'm not to worried about hydro assist, I'm only going towards 33's for sure possibly 35's but that's a maximum
