I have a 2000 Cherokee I bought for a few hundred dollars because it had a blown head gasket, turned out the #2 and 3 cylinders were bad. I have been having issues putting another 4.0 back in it because I really love the TDI motor and everything I own but the jeep is diesel. I have been doing a lot of research on running the AW4 behind anything other than the 4.0 and all the thread I have found start out good but suddenly end without any solid info. I want to keep an auto in the jeep. Anyone have any info on running the AW4 without shifting it manually?

The AW4 is not a very good choice for the TDI, and as far as I've ever read, you're not going to make it work without manually controlling it or maybe some very extreme modifications might get it close to working normally.

Mercedes OM617 is another diesel option, but again, you'd have to operate your AW4 manually. http://www.mercedesdiesel4x4.com/
