ring/pinion sizing
how does one know what ring and pinion gear ratio is best for his personal application? everything seems to have a trade-off, so too high a ratio would probably not be as good for the street, just as too low not so good for the trail. am i close?

your backwards. too low (numerically higher) would be less preferable on the street, and too high, (numerically lower) would sacrifice trail.
It just comes down to how and where you drive.
I have 4.88's and 35's, I would run 5.13's if I could and be fine. Even driving it everyday. Actaully, on my next set of axles it will be.
You can use that calculator and see what ratio changes do to cruise/crawl rpm, to try and make an accurate decision.
Remember though, even stock, a little more gear could be had with no problem, I like to stay a little lower than stock no matter what, unless you plan on driving around at 85 all the time

thanks ct67 72, i didn't know if going with too low (or high) depending on how you look at it, would wind too many rpms on the road. i was thinking of 4.11's, but i would like to just a tad lower (or higher, however your looking at it), such as 4.56 ratio. what about this gauge you where talking about? by the way, i was born in ct.

That chart is for a 1 to 1 ratio, as in 4th gear in a 5 speed manual transmission or as in 3rd gear in a 4 speed auto. Main problem with it is to many guys use the chart without multiplying by either .79 for a manual or .75 for an auto trans.
The formulas are good though.
