Cruiser54 and company,
I have a 87 XJ with the Renix 4.0 and I also have a 96 4.0 engine, I was reading in this post that you said that the throttle body and head make the most difference in performance between the HO and renix motors, so I was curious if I were to swap the head from the 96 onto the 87 motor and the Throttle body from the 96 (since it is a 60mm) onto the Renix intake would everything bolt up and connect correctly? or would I need to modify the connections to the Throttle body to make everything work?

Throttle body size and exhaust manifold. 96 is 58mm. Not 60mm.
Have your throttle body bored to 60mm and be bigger than the HO. get rid of the crush in the exhaust pipe after the exhaust manifold. easy.

Thank you for the advise , thought i read somewhere on here it was 60 mm guess not.. so do you not reccomend the head swap also? Thinking about doing a stroker when money allows but a little more power sooner than later is a good thing also

Save the 96 for the stroker while you enjoy your present Jeep.
Read this:
HO myth buster
Renix in 90 made 182 HP. HO in 91 made 190 HP. That's 8 HP difference.
HO only made more HP than Renix at higher RPMs and not a bit more torque. HO had a 58 mm throttle body versus a 52 mm throttle body on a Renix. That’s 20% more air available through the HO throttle body. The HO also had a better design header. See where I'm going with this?
It’s only a 4% horsepower increase…..
The whole 8HP was not mostly from the head, but from the bigger TB and better exhaust manifold.
Put a 60mm TB from www.strokedjeep.com on your present manifold using the Renix head, eliminate the "crush" in your headpipe with proper re-routing, and go for it.
HO stands for Highly Overrated.
