Default Removing c8.25 carrier to weld spiders

Hey guys I'm planning to weld my c8.25 and my buddy suggests removing the carrier to give it a good welding on the bench... I removed the front to put in an aussie locker but have never removed the rear. Can i just pull the 4 bolts and remove it all as one or will that mess up the shims etc that are in there??

You will open a can o worms. There are no shims. There are adjusting disks. That if they fall out and you don't know how to set them up you will be up **** creek with a bad rearend. To adjust them you need a bar that is 4 feet long with a 1 inch nut welded to the end.

Ahh I see. I am kindof leaning towards just welding it up in the housing....

What is the deal with the 4ft bar and welded nut??

You have to go thru the axle tube to adjust.

I personally would never weld a c-clip axle. Every one ive ever seen welded failed horribly on the trails. The factory carriers just are not strong enough to handle the forces on them.

Is it usually the carriers that fail though or the shafts breaking??

I replaced a carrier in a 8.25 a few months back. Its simple to adjust the back lash provided you have the proper tools.

in case you or anyone else needs to remove the carrier, this is a great write up. a little more in depth but still talks about re-installing the carrier specifically.

Usually the carriers when it comes to welded rearends. It may last for years or it may break first time out but its definately a weak point to be aware of. I run a spartan in my 8.25 which reuses factory carrier and replaces the spider gears . I have a spare carrier and spider gears in the trailer just incase

Sorry I havent been on here in a while and I just saw there were some questions. At my job we have a bunch of dodge dakotas and some of them have a 8.25 with track lock carriers. Some how one of them ended up with 2 different size tires on the back and scored up the friction plates. Instead of just replacing the plates my boss ordered a whole new carrier. So I kept the old carrier replaced the friction plates and now it is waiting to go in to my 8.25.

I had a factory shop manual that explained it exactly how to replace. The thread you posted is pretty spot on. Just all the specs for the torquing/back lash adjustment were at the very end of the that write up.

So have most of you welded the spiders while the carrier is still in the diff? I heard the side bearings can also get cooked if you weld in the diff...
