Default Remote start install

I would like to install a remote start/keyless entry system (viper 4105v) this season. I have a 98 limited with factory keyless entry (no longer functions). The factory board has been removed from the overhead console. Will a factory board need to be present in order for the aftermarket system to work? All doors lock and unlock from the driver side control panel.

No, you do not need any part of the factory system. There are about half a dozen wires under the steering column directly related to wiring the aftermarket remote start. You will need to run one wire through the firewall and tap into the tach feed wire from the ECM in the main wire loom that runs along the inside drivers front fender toward the firewall. You may need other wires depending on the specific features your system has, but mine is remote with locks and security, and that's all I had to do to make remote start function. My system has "on-board" relays for the remote start built into the brain, rather than requiring external relays, so that simplifies wiring.

Check out www.the12volt.com for diagrams and wire color charts for help.

I have a similar DEI system on my 98 limited. No problem at all. The range is insane, like 2000 ft.

I installed one on my 87 and the system I put in had a handy relay module. (it was a little bit older system) All the heavy gauge wires went into that and it was connected via small gauge wire to the brain which I could hide somewhere else. I had to run fused power feeds to the relays to provide the power during remote start.
