We probably need a little more information.
Do the door locks work from the switch on the doors?
If it's only the remote that does not work did you replace the battery in the remote?
If it ends up being a bad remote or keyless system, you can buy a new aftermarket keyless entry for less that one factory keyfob costs at the dealer.

Yeah from the inside buttons work, it's just the remote. And yeah I'm guessing it's just the battery but I'm second guessing taking it apart to reach the battery cause I don't want to mess up or break the housing which leaves me ****ed.. I guess I can take a chance with it...any suggestions?

I have a 98 also and just replaced my batteries in my remote. You wont break anything, the electronics are a solid unit inside the plastic housing, just pull the plastic part gently, and you are good to go.

another question? How's the key fob sync'd to your car? I'm pretty sure you can't use your fob on other XJ's so just randomly wondering how it's synced, same thing with remote controls, my mom had 3 TV and 1 control came with one TV and also worked on the 2nd but not the 3rd...****s wierd.

All the remotes have a uniquie code. Yes, any remote can be programmed to any RKE equipped Cherokee but it has to be programmed with a scan tool plugged into the OBDII port.
