Regearing: Tire Size and Weight vs. Gear Ratio
I recently upgraded to new 31x10.50 R15 General Grabbers, the only issue so far as been the fact that these are very heavy tires. According to the General they are 56 pounds a tire, and I have steel 15x8 wheels. It has sucked my gas mileage pretty bad, I do alot of city driving and I figure ill end up with between 13 and 11 mpg this tank.
Clearly a regear is in order but the question is brought up of what gear would be most appropriate. 4.10s is most commonly recommended for 31's, but with the heavy weight of these tires should 4.56 be considered? I really need it to be useful on the highway, I need to be able to get up to highway speeds. I was looking to see what the general consensus was with regards to this. Is it worth going to a lower gear ratio due to the weight regardless of the tire size or should I just stick to 4.10s?

My MTR's (31's) are 50lbs on TJ Moabs and with 4.56's (anitcipating 33's) I have a lot of extra power, to the point that I can bark them without even trying. I have to be careful with the throttle to be honest. I would say 4.10's would be fine for what you're running.

As no rdplz said, with the consideration of one day going bigger than 31's, going right to a 4.56 might be worth it. You also said that you have seen a significant decrease in mpgs and I'm assuming acceleration. Going from a 3.55 (I'm assuming you have the aw-4) to a 4.10 is a small gain that costs a lot and does not allow for room to move to a bigger tire. I BELIEVE that 33's and 4.56 is very close to stock, so anything less than a 4.56 doesn't seem like its worth it. Here's how I see it: You want something thats more capable off road. This means you are going to have to sacrifice on road ability... At least to some degree. Just my .02!

Well these aren't average 31s they are much heavier then your standard 31. That's why I was asking for everybodys opinion on this. That extra weight has to play a factor.

If you're sucking down that much gas you should look at other causes.
As far as meet ups and such, check into HRJC.org. It's our local club. Lots of good folks.

I'm having issues with misfires and believe it has to do with my minicats being bad. But that has been going on since last june so my baseline mpg has already taken that into account. Hopefully that issue will be fixed soon. 4.56s do seem like a much better bang for my buck.

That's why I went with them. For the money, 4.56's are the better deal, plus if you decide to go 33's you're already set up for them. I would advise that you consider getter a locker now (if you want one that is) if you're gonna do gears. Might as well knock it all out at once while you're in t here rather than do the work a couple times.
