Do you need a new carrier when going lower with one of these? Going from 3.55 to 4.10. If I don't need a new one I'm going with a lunchbox locker to save over a Detroit

The only lunchbox lockers I'm finding are the Powertrax No-Slip and the USA Standard Gear Spartan Locker. These the only option? Which is better?

I have an Aussie with 4.88's in my 8.25. You will need a special tool to setup the carrier bearing preload. I used a 36mm nut and welded a socket to it. I don't know how the other brands are, but i had to grind down and tooth on my ring gear to get the center pin back in the carrier.

the no slip is the quietest and best handling lunch box locker. I love mine.

No carrier change required as was mentioned earlier.
I just went to Yukon 4.88's and used Spartan lockers in the D30 front, 8.25 rear.
The Spartans are a little noisy when they unlock, and lock back up, but nothing like the Lockrite I had in a '92 YJ. That thing sounded like a bomb going off in my diff!

I have an Aussie locker in my 2000. It is very noisy next to a power trax. I've been told it is because of the type of metal used. Also Aussie locker recommend 85w-140 non synthetic gear oil. I'm running Delo 85w-140 gear oil . An no lsd additive. The 85w-140 does help a little with noise over using like 75-90 or 75-140 synthetic oils. And yes this lunch box locker works really good.

For the 8.25 I would go with the Detroit Locker as you will be using it all the time, if you decide to go cheaper do it in the D30 instead. 3 very good reasons for a Detroit strength, quality and they are quiet.

Yeah he said he wanted to save money over buying a Detroit..

I get the buy once, save up and get the strongest part best quality but not everyone can afford the best.

He'll with that line of thinking swap in a Dana 44 or dana60. Its the stronger better axle lol

If everyone had money to do it right the first time then Rough Country, Rustys, etc would be out of business..

Although I do agree on lunchbox upfront instead though.

I'm not going any bigger than 31-10.5s so I was thinking a lunchbox locker should be plenty strong? Also wouldn't a locker up front be kinda quirky on snow/ice? I was thinkin going with a Detroit Tru-Trac or staying open up front. Anybody got any experience with the Tru-Trac up front on snow and ice?

It will be...and I'd say get the spartan, very easy install.

Noise level difference between spartan & lockright is not discernible. But the spartan is an easier install.

I am open up front, and have had no issues, but if the front has no traction, and the rear does, you're heading the way the rear is aligned.

the powertrax no-slip is quieter than both of those lockers.
