Regearing?
moving up to 4.5" lift on 33's want to regear but debating on 4.10's or 4.56's.
It is my DD and I do use it on snowboard trips so it does see highway use. Would like to keep as close to a "Stock" setup. just don't want to gear to low.

3.55 to 4.10 is a pretty small increase. In the end 4.56 would probably be more useful. And what was that about making your XJ more off road capable AND maintaining stock qualities? Haha.. There's always a sacrifice one way or another. Some will say their lift kit rides better than stock, but that's rare. Point is, regearing is a one time deal. Unless you've got tons of cash to throw around. So you will want to make sure that whatever gearing that you move up to is sufficient enough to handle whatever you throw at it... (including maybe going a size larger in tires)

I'm running 33s with 4.10 gears with a manual transmission and it does well on and off road so 4.56 for an auto should be good.

With autos you need "more gear". You need a numerically higher gear, resulting in more reduction.
4.56 vs 4.10 with all other things equal (transmission, tires, speed, etc) the 4.56 gears will have the engine running at a higher RPM to maintain the same speed as the 4.10.
If you look at the stock gearing, for the I6 engine, manuals came with 3.07:1 whereas the automatic came with 3.55:1
So 4.56 on your auto would be comparable to 4.10 on my manual.
