Default Rear tire carrier vs roof mount tire

I am debating which way to go, bumper mount tire carrier or roof mount in a rack. I am wondering two things, using a 31" tire can you see anything at all out the rear(this is mostly a dd) and second question is do the bumper mount carriers rattle back there.
Thanks

depends on where the tire mounts but most likely, your gonna have a pretty ubstructed view. no noise if they are well manufactured, take a peek at jcroffroad.com just got mine in today!

my biggest issue between the 2 is not sight or rattles its weight. Tires are heavy and putting weight high on a jeep (i've had my TSL and BGF MT on the roof) is never a good idea. keep the center of gravity low and put the tire on the back. for a good carrier look up the detours tail bone system.

I have this same concern. My 16 yr old will be driving the 2000 XJ and I definitely want him to be able to see. We will be doing no off roading so will it be okay to put it on top? I also am concerned about having the tag relocated without a light on it. Definitely a ticket waiting to happen in Alabama.

I had a 16 year old in Alabama one time. He didn't "offroad" either. He just happened to drive into the river by accident

Agreed. It is the cheapest method, keeps visibility out the back relatively high, and will keep the center of gravity low which is a good thing with a young driver.

Thanks for the info. Probably would be best to put it where it belongs as stated. Im sure it will end up seeing some mud etc... but we have a tricked out Polaris Ranger we do most of that with. Thanks again.....

I tried putting my 31 inch spare in the back of my xj and the stock spot and i the wing nut tie down thing was not long enough and i didnt want to lay it down because i have a tool box and sub box back there. I also had a xj with the rear spare tire on the back and it made my jeep sag in the back it also had 31s. Just thought i would let you know

They dont fit in my stock location. I tried. Is there a trick? Because my tire hits the seat and the rear hatch. Let alone wont mount with the provided hardware.

I can't mount the tire inside because I will need the space and am going to run 32's. I don't really like the idea of it on the roof because of weight up high but also it will be a huge pain if I need to get it down(think muddy, freezing, pouring rain, being really tired, it's high, it's heavy, etc) but am worried about rear view obstructions and rattling from the rear(can't stand things rattling on my vehicles).Looking for feedback from those that do have rear mounted spares
