Rear Sway Bar
 

I have a 1999 XJ with a 4.5" lift. The previous owner removed the rear sway bar. (I know a lot of people do). My question is, is there any extended sway bar links for the rear? I tow a 20' center console boat a lot and I was told that the rear sway bar would make a difference in stability. I'm not worried about flexing. Thanks

I dont know if some company makes them, but I'm sure if you search the web you will find them. The other option would be to make your own.

Yes, they do make a HUGE difference.
Regardless of what all the 'smart' guys say.


This is off a Blazer with WJ links.

You can make your own, I suggest walking through the PnP and find your own links and compare other heavier bars. Bring a measuring tape and see what you can find.

They don't make a huge difference? I took mine off and don't even notice any difference at all?

I guarantee you that my MJ handles better than anyone's XJ on this board, period.

I also modified my front bar, 28mm, but I cannot find my pics at the moment.


Also, if you actually read my post you will see I suggested a HEAVIER bar.

Thanks, I'll be going to the salvage yard and do some digging. I have a little swaying when I'm just driving but when I tow the boat it is at times scary.

check your rear springs to make sure they are not week, week springs when towing will sag down enough to change your front caster angle and cause unwanted steering issues...i.e. sway

Springs are fine. With the boat hooked up the rear drops maybe an inch. I do need an alignment. When I bought it the inside of the front tires were wore pretty good. I'm sure that has something to do with it.

My question would be towing a 20' boat to begin with the XJ 4.0 is not a power house by any means, not to mention being able to stop it.


Just because you can do something is at times by no means a good idea. I have pulled my 16"8" Grizzly Aluminum Bass Boat/25 HP elec, start, 24v trolling mtr., loaded out with my XJ and it was all I really wanted behind it. Hills pulled the engine down (33" tires 4.56 gears 4 1/2" lift).

My wife and I went to two jobs and I took her to the mall in the city today. Drove at least 180 miles, from winding country mountain roads to the interstate.

Not all of use drive our MJ/Xjs over boulders, we expect them to perform well on the road too.


When it is set up correctly, HUGE difference.

My XJ is stock. I pull a small boat occasionally and I didn't see any notable differrence after removal. Just opinions man. Heck of an mj though dude. Looks sweet!

Same here. On an XJ all I noticed was a better ride. No difference in handling.
