Rear spare tire carriers for XJ that mount in hitch reciever?
Are there any rear tire carriers that mount in the rear hitch receiver that either swing out of the way or lower easily so that the rear hatch can still be opened? Already have a kick *** rear bumper. Don't want to replace it if I don't have to. Thanks!!!

Yes, but every one I've seen looks crooked cuz they do not sit tight enough in the hitch.

Weld a carrier to your bumper. If you don't have the capability, a local shop or maybe even a member can weld one on for you. Should be able to get a carrier in a 'weld on kit'.

Well hell! Thanks for the reply! For the cost of a crappy crooked hitch mounted one, I could get a new bumper with an even better set up. I guess I should look for a fabricator to weld a swing out to the bumper I already have.

Thanks! That is what I am thinking will be the best option. Have a fabricator modify the bumper I already have. I was just hoping that there was some spring loaded or hydrolic swing DOWN hitch mounted tire carrier which I could modify to double as a pet step so my German Shepherds could get into the lifted XJ more easily.

Honestly i think youll have to make a new bumper for a swing out.It don't stick out far enough for a spindle mount on it.And the swing out arm on that would be to thin to hold much weight.

Some people modify a bicycle carrier. They mount in the hitch and swing down. That's my plan eventually. They can usually be had on craigslist for around $60-$80

The only problem we would have with a hitch mount tire carrier (and the Knucklebone DOES look awesome!) is that when we travel and tow the XJ behind our RV, we would have to take off the tire AND carrier in order to mount my wife's wheelchair ramp to the back of the Cherokee, and throw the spare tire and carrier into the back of the truck. Carrying a fullsize 33 inch spare in the back of the truck isn't an option for everyday, because our 2 German Shepherds need all that room in the back, and the spare tire would take up too much room. I guess my only other option would be to get a rooftop safari rack, and put the spare tire up there...although getting it up and down from there would be a chore...those things aren't light weight...lol!

Why can't you put that stuff in the RV ?? So the dogs have room and you still have them if needed.

Looks like the Knucklebone with the alternative mount would be the perfect solution for around 270.00 plus shipping and handling. I'll give them a call and see how exactly it mounts. From the vague pictures I was able to find, it appears that the alternative mount is some sort of clamped and bolted on receiver that attaches to the side of the hitch receiver by clamping around the stock receiver cross bar.
