Default Rear shoulder belts?

Am looking at swapping my rear seat belts in my 89. Currently they are just lap belts but my kids ride back there and I would like to swap in some shoulder belts and I'm wondering if anyone has done this already. I searched a bit but came up empty so any help is much appreciated.

The '89 was not designed for shoulder belts and has no fittings for them.

Yeah I know. That's why I am looking for ideas on how to make it work.

No worries, just hoping someone with more knowledge then me has tried and succeeded with this. I'm thinking that mounting it to my cage will probably be easiest.

i would just pull the whole front seat belts out of some junk yard xj and mount it to your cage. weld a bolt to your cage and bolt the 3rd point of the belt just the same way they are in the front.

Whoa whoa they started shoulder harness in the rear in 90? My laredo has em. Go to the jy and try to find an early xj with em. I'll take a look at mine when I get home and see if its possible without too much trouble.

Chrysler made a kit to retrofit the harnesses to 84 thru 90 XJs. They are no longer available, but they had to be bolt-in.

Or, someone paid the dealership to install the kit. I'd have to look up the TSB to get the exact years/break off dates.

You beat me to it. I looked it up last night. Unfortunately, I understand the kits are no longer available. It would be great to get ahold of an instruction sheet, wouldn't it?

I don't remember us ever installing one of these kits at the dealership. IIRC, the kits were pricey and the labor cost pretty high.

Default Shoulder belts in rear of older xj

Here you go!!

The body has the holes stamped into it from the factory, with donor parts from a newer xj, you can install them yourself! I helped LanShark and Teko get going when they wanted the same problem resolved. LanShark made a video of the process.
