As the say at the dealer if u are using less then 2qts between oil changes ur good because if u replace the seal the usually leak within 15k

your oil pan could have rusted out, i thought my rear main was leaking for the longest time because every time i got out of my xj it smelled horrible. check your pan in between the exhaust manifold the heat peels the paint then the salt gets in there. i changed my pan and i havent had any leaks since. i had 215,000 when i changed it, i have 220,000 now and no leaks since

I think this is a very dumb question, but you did clean off ALL the old crap off the engine? Could be residual crud.

no thats a legitimate quetstion. And the answer is yes. And yesterday when I got under it I definately can see that it's coming from the rear main. its seeping down the flywheel cover and a little down the pan. It uses about a half quart between oil changes so it's not horrible yet but i dont want to get 300 miles from home and have it fail on me like last time.

dump a half ounce of brake fluid in your oil fill tube. It will swell the seal and stop the leak. If you don't have a measuring spoon, use 1 capful from a big jug(half gallon to gallon size) or 3 capfuls if you have a small bottle (quart or less size)

Just my 2 cents.. I would check closely 'above' where you're seeing the leak. It could easily be coming down from the valve cover. I replaced my rms about 20,000 miles ago, and still no leaks. I did notice that my '93 doesn't like to be on the full mark on the dipstick.. I was topping it off between changes and it always seemed to be 1/2 quart low. The last few changes, i just let it stay at 1/2 quart low and it never goes below that.. I don't know where the oil was going, no leaks or smoke, but hey.. it's a Jeep.
