Rear driveshaft woes
Well yesterday I was out wheeling and snapped the weld on my rear driveshaft. Luckily there was a guy who welded it up there and got me back on the road. I realize at the bare minimum I'll need to get it balanced somewhere but clearly the weld is a weak point, so I'm thinking i would really be better off getting a new driveshaft. Does anyone know of a good aftermarket driveshaft out there? Or do I have to get something custom made? Im running an AX15 with np231 and a AA sye and a ford 8.8 rear if that makes a difference. Thanks everyone

looks like your current d-shaft was a stock front, extended 2 inches?
if so you can grab a front out of a 5.2 v8 grand cherokee. they are the same u-joints and it is 2 inches longer than a stock front xj d-shaft. this would be your cheapest route but Tom Woods makes some awsome d-shafts.
i personally use front range driveline in englewood colorado for all my d-shaft needs.

Yeah, I didn't build the d-shaft; I bought the jeep with it so I'm not exactly sure. Guessing how the rest of my jeep was built,I'm sure it was the cheapest route possible. However I am a fan of the junkyard myself, so if I were to snag one of those grand shafts, is it a direct bolt-on? Or would I have to swap different joints on it? Thanks for the quick responses everyone...

Well I'll make a trip up to the pull-a-part this week to try and score a zj v8 front shaft. Also gonna look into the Tom woods shaft as a more permanent replacement. Thanks everyone!

Im finally going from 3" to 4.5" via Shackles/Spacers. I looked this up awhile ago when i researched but how far will a stock front DS out of an auto XJ extend to? I have a AW4 tranny and ive heard that i could put a stock front DS in the rear with no re lengthening and have plenty of room to flex with. is it true? Im goin to use a RC sye too if it matters just cause its cheapest.

UPDATE: well I went to the pull a part and grabbed a zj v8 front shaft. (also had to go back up there and snag a 8.8 yoke out of a ranger) Put it all together and looks quite similar to my old ds, minus the broken/repaired weld. Installed it and she looks good! (still gotta reweld my shock mount, but that's next on the list lol) Cost me all of about 33 dollars total and the 1 piece shaft should be infinitely stronger than my lengthened shaft ever was...and at that cost i know where I'm goin if I should happen to need another shaft for whatever reason! Thanks everyone for the good info!
