rear disc brakes swap from gc to xj
so i'm not sure if this should be in gc tech or advanced tech, but i'll try here
i have a 96 xj..it has a chrysler 8.25 rear..the drums a a bit wore out and i hate drum brakes so i was thinking....
i have access to a 95 gc and cant get to it at the moment, so i dont know which rear the gc has, but was wondering if i could take the rear disc brakes off and use them on my 96..
does anyone know if the gc's came with different rear options like the xj?
if i can does anyone know what i would need to do?
is it even possible?
is there a write up?
thanks in advanced for any and all help

Yes, you can do it. Is it worth it? YES!! Just use the brake parts from the ZJ on your XJ. There are plenty of write-ups out there. Here: http://www.stu-offroad.com/suspension/d35disc/d35-1.htm.

You can get the brake parts off of any ZJ with a Dana 35. You'll have to make the hole in the caliper mount bigger with a dremel or die grinder to fit the 8.25 axle tubes, but other than that its a direct swap. Make sure to get the caliper studs and lug studs out of the donor axle. They'll be longer than what's on there now. You'll also have to figure out the parking brake cables. There are several ways to accomplish that.

Theoretically, with the factory proportioning valve (designed for the stock drums), you should see minimal increase in stopping power over a properly adjusted drum brake because you aren't increasing the pressure. In my experience the stopping power has increased dramatically, so throw that theory out the window. The perfect set up would be to use the prop valve from the ZJ also. I never bothered and i am happy with the increase that i got when i did the swap. Some people say that the ZJ prop valve is required, it is not. As for bolting onto a factory D44, i'm not sure. It should work though...
