Rear Bumper vs. Tail Light Lenses
I just bought a 2001 XJ that needs some work, so I'm new here. Hi everybody
One of the things on my list is to replace the rear bumper. I just replaced one of the tail light lenses, and was mystified by the design, which easily unbolts but then "tips" out with a little foot at the bottom, to get the lens the rest of the way out. It would NOT tip out without removing the bumper end cap, which seems like bad design.
So I'm wondering what happens if you get an aftermarket bumper that has welded-on end caps, like this:
It seems to me that there's no way you'll get that lens off even to replace a bulb. Does anybody have an experience with this? I'm trying to decide what kind of rear bumper replacement to get, and I like the swing-away tire holders, but I'm concerned about this issue.

The rubber grommet will give enough to pull it straight out. Getting it back in is the trick. Use a little PB or WD40 on the grommet and it'll slide right in...

Well, when I pulled out the old lens to replace it, not knowing exactly what the foot was shaped like, it broke off. So beware if your plan is to just pull it straight out of the grommet. It is shaped like a stair step and isn't designed to pull straight out.
