rear axle carrier question
so my rear end is welded, and geared to 4.56 i am disliking the welded rear end more then i had anticipated. so my question is can i just remove the entire carrier and toss a new carrier in with either stock spider gears or say an aussie? or will this mess up the gear set?

i dont know of one offhand.
but you will need to make a tool with a 36 mm (i think) nut on end and any ol sized nut you have a socket for on the other end, and slide it into the axle tubes. Inside there are the adjustment collars ( i cant for the life of me think of the real term for them right now) if you turn them in, the carrier will go towards the other side of the housing, turn them out, and that will allow the carrier to go towards the side turned out.
with the 8.25 you want between 6 and 10 thousands of backlash (measured using a dial indicator, just place it on one of the ring gear teeth and move the carrier til it makes pinion tooth contact each way)
after that there is carrier preload to worry about. it isnt too critical, but once you get the carrier tight enough in there, just make it a lil bit tighter. you should be able to move it by hand easily, but showing just a little drag.
