Default Rear axle blown?

I have a 2000 xj with a Chrysler 8 1/4 in it. As i was replacing the u-joint today on the rear drive shaft i noticed that there was some play in the rear pinion gear. My question is if its blown or is it just the pinion bearing? The pinion seal is also leaking. Thanks

bearing is more than likely worn, sometimes you can get away with just replacing the bearing and crush sleeve. and a more shadtree approach would be to just tighten down on the pinion nut somemore, doing this will compress the crushsleeve a little and take away the play in the pinion. but, it takes a lot of leverage to compress a crush sleeve.

I thought the same thing, but with my front axle. Before you make any decisions, just make sure that the bolt is actually tight. Mine backed out and it was leaking. I replaced the seal because its very easy and tightened to spec and its all good now. good luck!! Always try the easy stuff first
