Check your local laws.
My state requires vehicles originally equipped with ABS to not have it removed.

D35 to a Chrysler 8.25 is only better 100% of the time. Go for it!
IMO, I'd just get a Lunchbox locker for it. I've read that guys that got Limited Slips were unhappy because they don't actually lock and still tend to slip while doing certain terrains.

Stay with the same gears you have in your front Dana 30 unless you plan on regearing the front. I've never heard of the 20% rule. All I know is, if you don't have matching gears and use 4wd, say bye bye to your transfer case.

Doing the axle swap is cake since the 8.25 is just a stronger stock axle. Make sure to get one from 97 and up so you get the better 29 spline. Everything is the same except you'll need new u-bolts since the tubes have a larger diameter. The brakes and e-brake cables all match up. You MIGHT need to use the driveshaft also from the Jeep that you get the 8.25 out of because the housings are a different length.

I did this swap and alot of people suggested doing the 8.8. Problem is, it's alot more money and work to do. You need new leaf spring perches welded on, new shock mounts welded on, requires a SYE and rear driveshaft and adapter to mount to the pinion. THEN, you need to purchase e-brake cables because yours wont mount to the set up. More $$$. Unless you're going to be running 37's on your Jeep, the 8.25 will be just fine. It's plenty strong.

Oh, when swapping over to the 8.25, just remove the ABS fuse and relay, cut the sensor wires and you're all set.

yea if dont pick up this D44 then ill deff go the 8.25 rout.
The ford 8.8 sounds great if you have the know how or a shop that can do it for you for a fair price.
But where i live there are no shops that wont take you to the bank on something like this .
im leaning towards LSD because i dont want to hear the noises that come from them and i dont want gas mileage to suffer either.
but deff thanks for the info.

What size ubolts did you end up with? My local JY finally located a 8.25, and I picked it up earlier this week, from a 98 XJ, per the JY tag.
It took the JY three tries to find a 8.25 that was NOT a mis-ID'ed D35 that I spotted when I went to pick it up.

And are the shock mounts on the 8.25 different from a D35? All I had time to confirm was perch width and bolt pattern at the time, but when I moved the axle tonight to hopefully work on this weekend, I saw the shock mounts are not the same as my D35.

And the metal axle ID tag is sheared off on this 8.25, is there another case stamping or something I can use to confirm this axle's year instead of pulling the axle shafts?
