Questions about Serious Off Road kit install
 

i just bought the serious off road 4.5 long arm kit. im still getting pieces in but have a couple questions i cant seem to find on google.

first question is these are the shims and new pins i got, are these the correct part number that i needed for the kit because those pins dont fit in the shims, or do i need to drill the holes in the shims bigger, and exactly how am i suppose to put the shims in?

second are these brackets or whatever they are called for the leaf springs. should i put those in? because anything i've found on the web ppl havent put them in, and which way are they suppose to go in?

Those "brackets" are called shackles and yes. If they came with the kit you should run them. Or I would anyways

On those shims you have to drill them to fit the pin bolt. Clamp the springs together using C-clamps remove the old bolt, drill the shim to fit over the threaded part (not the head) of the new longer bolts then install the new bolts and remove c-clamps.

Are you running an SYE? This determines if you need to run shims or not.

Those brackets are indeed leaf spring shackles. If you don't install them you will not get 4.5" lift.

Nothing personal, but if you don't know what a shackle is, you probably need to do a little more research before installing your lift. These things aren't just bolt on and go.

Those are the RE boomerang shackles. They do indeed need to be installed. The angled portion faces the rear.

Yea, I have gained a lot of helpful knowledge from many of the manufacturers tech departments and supplier techs, like Iron Rock. When I built my jeep, I did not know about all the forums, I picked up the phone.

X2 Yes a quick phone call while your working on it can help a lot when working on a unknown I have done that a lot with vendors Rustys, Quadratec, etc.


Does seem strange to get a kit where you need to start off by drilling larger holes in the kit to assemble.

yes im running a sye, i already got that part of it installed. i have talked to frank a couple times and hes been helpful, just didnt want to have to bother him again over labor day weekend. i've been getting parts in from the kit pretty much each day and some of the stuff from rubicon express isnt labeled or says what they are for, sorry just hard to tell whats what when you get a bunch of random stuff coming in.

ive done research but still dont know all the terms, sorry first xj and first lift, ive done lowered hondas for the last 12 years, im very mechanicly but this is definitly new to me.

also thanks for the info on the shims, i thought i was looking at something wrong or got the wrong pins, like you guys said seems odd that first thing u need to do is drill holes in them to make them fit when your ordering a kit

It's all good dude! It's quite a learning curve when you come into the XJ world. Im a recovering minitrucker so I smell what ya steppin in. You got a serious LA kit and a SYE. You sir are well on the path to XJ righteousness. They just take some getting used to.

Once a minitrucker always a minitrucker. I been there done that.

The threads don't fit the shims?

Yes you have to install the new shackles. Without them your back end will set lower than the front and you won't have proper articulation either.

I haven't had any dealings with Serious Offroad (YET!) but I knew Frank would chime in eventually when he saw a thread about his kit.


Just a suggestion for the shims - When I bought new shims and bolts for my XJ, the bolts were also too big for the shims. Turns out they were also too big for the hole in the leaf spring. You can get almost exactly the same bolt at Home Depot for pretty cheap, but in whatever diameter you need. That's what I did, and it saved me from having to drill shims or springs.
