Default Question on transfer cases

Ok im new and looking for a xj.Ive found several and im confused about the transfer cases.Ive searched and read but ive not asked so here it goes.Do i want to stay away from the np242 (4hi,4lo,4part time)? If i get one with this tcase can i do anything with it asfar as sye or do i haft to swap tcase some where down the road?If i had to swap is it a big enough pain to just wait on a np231 to come around?I have also read things about aw4 and ax15 what does that mean.thanks guys

The major down side to the NP242j is that there is only one shaft replacement SYE available. tom Woods sells one to the tune of $400+ plus a $400 core IIRC. Youcan to a hack and tap SYE for far less.

AW4 is an automatic tranny, ax15 is a manual.

also the 242 hangs a little lower that the 231. swaping out cases is about a 45 minute job, & the 231 can be found in junkyards anywhere from $35-$100!

231 is considered a "command trac" and only has part time 4x4 options, the 242 is "select trac" and has full time and part time 4x4 options.

2, 4hi, n, 4lo=231 if it has an added "full time" 4hi it's a 242.

Or you can crawl under a find the little silver and red tcase tag that'll tell you 242 or 231 lol.

Not to thread-jack, but,
I grew up in Syracuse, NY and lived there till 2001.
2 of my good buddies worked at the New Venture Gear plant where these were all built. One of them from 1993 until 1999. One of them from 1995, and he still works there. I used to meet them there to go have beers after their shifts.
The plant used to be co-owned by both GM, and Chrysler......then at some point in the early 90's GM sold out of it. A few years ago Chrysler sold the operation to (I believe another company) who in turn sold the operation to a company called Magna.......It's currently in the works to move the operation out of the country, and the plant it scheduled to be closed......

My buddy who still works there, has worked assembly line since 1995, and he works the machines that de-burr, and spline the input, and output shafts.......My other friend used to work in heat-treating......

I like the idea that both of them have no doubt had their hands on some of the parts in the 242 under my '96

I personally would look for something with a 231 because 1 not a big fan of full time transfer cases and 2 I think there are cheaper and more aftermarket "goodies" for the 231.

Definitely more goodies for the NP231. Ask me how I know
All in all though I love having the NP242. Winter here in MN is USUALLY pretty brutal and knowing you can leave the t-case in 4wd ALL WINTER LONG without damaging it is great. If you have a lot of spotty roads with bits of ice then pavement get the NP242 so you can just put it in fulltime and forget about it!
