I used aircraft stripper. You can get it at most auto parts stores. Just be really careful NOT to get any on other parts of the Jeep!!! It will clean it up pretty quickly so you can sand the rusty places, then I used rust converter as per directions on the can before I applied the bed liner. It seems to be holding up pretty well.

i know bedlining the interior of your ride can cause it to get very hot. so i wonder if the roof would cause a similar effect?

I bedlined my entire xj, haven't noticed any heat issues.

Hasn't been an issue for me, either.

Have fun with doing it. I have a 2000 xj and it took the body shop two full days to do it right( no waves or pitting). It cost a lot of dough too.
