Mine is a '93 XJ with 4" lift and 31" BFG Mudders (the new design) with about 20,000 on the tires. At low speeds on pavement they rumble like an earthquake and shake the entire vehicle, especially when coming to a stop. Drives me crazy. Has anyone out there had a similar experience?

my old mud tires did that when they were cupped. rotate and balance.

is the tread pattern getting choppy?

chopped/scallopped tread is the usual cause for that; wheelbearings will cause a similar sound but rarely below 30-35mph

Mud tires will do that. Like said before, rotate and balance and it should help a lot.

yeah I got some used Dakota Definity mt off Craigslist and they have uneven chop tread. about a month ago they started making that noise and it drives me crazy.

I replaced my wheel bearings, axle u joints, ball joints, and steering box and the noise was still there. Pulled the front drive shaft then pulled my axle shafts. noise was still there and I wanted to cry.

I needed to replace that stuff anyways except for the u joints.

I pulled the drive shaft and axle shafts for a different reason but I was hoping each time that the noise would be gone and it wasnt.

finally just for the hell of it I tried swapping tires with my buddy and the noise was completely gone

now I know it's my worn out beat up tires. they make this vibration through the body that sounds horrible

choppy tires need to be replaced.. they got choppy because of many issues.. primarily lack of rotation.
KM2's are the smoothest MT you ll ever have..

Mine would hum, but not rumble or shake. Sounds like one or more is out of balance, Id get em balanced and rotated. Do it before you destroy the tires.

my buddy has a wrangler on choppy ***'d 33" mud tires, and between 2-30mph, it rumbles like a damn earthquake haha; the whole jeep vibrates. we know its his tires because we've balanced them and taken roadforce measurements. the balance was fine but the choppy wear pattern on the tread caused the rumbling at low speeds, mostly just on smooth pavement

once a tire tread starts getting choppy it is all downhill from there, doesn't really get any better. You live with it, or get new tires.

Usually caused by the alignment being off.

It is not caused by an out of balance tire.

Its not an issue with the bfg km2, something is out of whack to make them wear like that. Mine wore evenly and smoothly for all 55k miles i got out of them.

KTM i know you work at a shop so im gonna ask you here lol... I replaced my stock LCA's with RC ones for a 3-4.5 inch lift... Is the extra .75" enough to get something out of alignment where i need to get it algined again? It feels ok just wondering...

I woudnt think so. You really only affected the caster. (toe a super teensie bit)
Your caster may be a bit more positive, but if it drives fine Id run it.

Sorry i thought i put in there it would have moved the caster... i at least knew that much... But yeah feels fine and doesn't have any wobble and is a lot tighter than it was... Thanks man
