Power leather into a non power leather XJ

I currently have 2 XJ's one with power and heated leather seats other with out. Has anyone every swapped power leather seats into a non power xj? i reached under the non power xj looking for wiring for power seats but i am not feeling anything.

Both XJ's are the same year i was hoping they ran the wiring for everything.

You should be able to. You will need the harness that starts under the passenger seat side rug, the seats and bases, and the switches for the heaters. Also one of those silver circuit breakers in the fuse box in the passenger side footwell. I did it to my '00. Here is a shot of the harness that should be in the Jeep that does not have the power seats that you will attach the harness for the seats/heaters/etc too. Also a shot of the circuit breaker. I believe it is the one in Position 26. The one on the left of the 2 you will see next to each other. I am not 100% sure of the position because I did do this awhile ago. But the Jeep without the power seats will not have one in the spot like the Jeep that does have power seats.

Figured I should also tell you that there will 3 connectors attached to the power seat base on the passenger side. One is for the power seat. The other 2 are for the heaters. One goes to a relay and the other to what they call the SHIM. It is the white box. SHIM I believe stands for Seat Heater Interface Module. some good info... i just took the passanger seat out of the non power jeep and had that wiring you show there. it looks like i need to use the wiring that goes up to the heater switch.

Thanks for the info on the circuit breaker non power one doesnt have ones that power does.

looks like this should be a pretty simple swap like i was hoping!

You will have to most likely loosen your console, if not unbolt it all the way, cause the harness runs from the passenger seat to the driver's power seat under it. I just put a driver's power seat in first. I planned on doing some sound deadening on the floor so I figured when I ripped up the carpet to do that I would run the harness properly. At the moment I have it on top of the carpet running around the back of the console to the driver's side. That set up was non heated and only the driver's side was power. Then got my hands on some heated seats with both sides having power. The picture of the base you see is the passenger side that I have refreshed. So I will get that in maybe tomorrow. The heated seats are kinda of shot and don't work but I have some ideas on how to maybe fix them. But that is down the road.

Nice... i got the power stuff out of the power jeep i want. i plan on selling that jeep. the non power jeep has a dog smell to it so i think while i am here i am going to order a carpet kit.

Thanks again Ralph77 i got the power seats in the non power xj and boom it worked!

my driver heat seat has the classic the heat will work when it wants to. while i have this apart is there a write up to fix this issue? i have heard something about a lose wire did a quick look and didnt see anything.

Here is the thing about heated seats in an XJ. They are not pads. The wiring is actually part of the seat cover. Not that it can't be fixed but will require you to cut the seat up a little. So passenger side works fine? Driver's when it wants to? When the driver's side is not working does the on light in the switch blink? What part of the driver's seat does not work? Back or bottom? Remember that relay and SHIM I told you about. No idea how to test them if they are the problem. So in the bottom there are 2 sets of wires going to 2 connectors that plug in somewhere for power. The back only has one. Think of it this way. If they were aftermarket heating pads you have 2 for your butt and one for your back. You will need to take the seat cover off. Look at it from the inside. You will see foam. Between the leather and the foam is the wire. Do you see any burn marks in the foam? That would indicate a broken wire. Going to take a little detective work on your part. Google it. There are a couple write ups. Maybe check continuity with a meter I guess. Here is a shot of a bottom to give you an idea of what you are dealing with. Did not get my passenger power seat base in today and I have no idea if and when I will get to the heated seats. So my experience is minimal. My dumb ideas are to maybe try and wire aftermarket pads to the factory harness. Another one is maybe remove all the wiring, replace it if I can figure out what wiring I should use (cause it does get old and brittle over the years), and make my own removable pads out of the factory heating wire and connectors so they will be removable but plug right in to the harness.

Blinking light is indicating something is wrong. So my guess is not relay or SHIM. Since the driver's seat kinda works see if you can determine whether the back or the bottom is the one that is kicking out. Start with the simple and obvious. Are the connections good? If so probably going to have to dig in. Remove the seat. Take the seat off the base. Thinking to take the cover's off you will have to separate the back from the bottom. My bet would be bottom wiring. Driver's seat and the bottom take the most abuse. Separating them is pretty easy. If I remember correctly there is a torx on one side. Think with the torx is a little plastic washer. Remember its position. You are going to have to take all the springs off the frame and that metal gate looking thing. See picture 1 and 2. The bottom is held on with plastic clips. Pictures 3 and 4 are the plastic and the rod it clips to on one side. 5 and 6 are the other side. 2 tabs that go into to holes. The front I don't have a picture of but it is the same set up as 2 and 3. That will separate the foam and seat cover from the frame. The metal gate and the foam will still be attached to the seat cover with a couple hog rings. I am thinking you will not have to take it apart any farther then that to see underneath the seat cover and hopefully find a burn in the foam indicating where there might be a break in the wire. You can see the bottom and the metal gate I was talking about in the first shot.

I am doing this all from memory looking at pictures I have taken. So I might be mistaken about a couple things. Before you do all this be as sure as you can that it is actually a wire in the bottom. It is not hard. Careful with the springs, both taking them off and putting them back on, they have tension and could become a projectile. I will be interested in your progress.

Has any body used a after market heating pad because I would think it would be better then using the old wiring that can brake again . and if so how did you do it . both my seat heaters don't work .

If you are talking about using the aftermarket heating pads with the factory harness and switches I have not seen anything on the internet that helps. It is something I am going to see if it can be done but not anytime soon. Frankly it would just be easier to buy and wire the kit per the instructions. But what would be the fun in that.

I have the factory seat heaters keeping the factory switches would be nice .

First let me say electrical is not something I have ever been good with. My buddy who is took a look at the wiring diagrams. He thinks the switches are more then switches. He seems to think there are some diodes, please don't ask me what a diode is, in there too. Even he was a little confused by the wiring diagrams. Appears it is not just a simple switch. 12V run source, ground, etc. Now we really haven't gotten into to this yet. Plus as I stated earlier in the thread the seat bottom has 2 sets of wires. So if you were to try to hook up aftermarket heating pads to the factory connectors off the harness you would need 3 heating pads to do one seat. 2 for the bottom and one for the back. Now maybe you could splice the two for the bottom into one pad. An idea to kind of retain a factory look is maybe you could use something like this:

Think there are similar ones available out there too. Basically you just buy the aftermarket heating pads, wire them up per the instructions, buy that plate and use the aftermarket switches in there. They will at least be where the factory ones would be. Assuming that the wiring for the switches will reach that far. Here is a shot of the wiring diagram out of the '00 FSM. Maybe somebody out there who understands schematic can give us an idea if the factory switches could be use with aftermarket pads.
