post lift problems
after installing my rc 4.5 lift I went to test drive it and immediatley felt a clunking in the driveshaft. I brought it home and put the rear up on jack stands and put it in drive so I could inspect it and the driveshaft is spinning off center I installed a tc drop temp til I can buy an sye but the angle doesnt look to steep and I didnt have a pinion bearing problem before the lift so what could it be. I took a vid so as soon as i figure out how to post it I will

It seems people are getting a lot of problems with vibes after such small lifts. I guess I really lucked out. I have a 2000 XJ I have no SYE. I am at 4.5in. I did get slight vibes so I put 4 degree shims and it went away. Last week I removed my tcase drop for more clearence and was sure I would need to get an SYE next, but still no vibes. I also have RC leafs and I noticed that when you first install them until they brake in your XJ sits more like at about 6 inches. Measure the distance from the top of your axle tube to the frame. Stock is 6inches. Your leafs will settle a bunch. The only advice I have other then the SYE is maybe try 4 degree shims like I did.

Check the angles from the pinion and drive shaft, and the angle off the trans and the drive shaft, with a protractor or something available also try taking drive shaft off and spin the tires watch the pinion !

Yeah my last cherokee had a 5.5 with just a tc drop and no vibes ill try and post the angle tomorrow and remove the shaft but would the angle being off cause the shaft to spin off balance I would think that to be more of a pinion bearing being shot

I dont know if this helps but my pinion is almost exactly in line with the driveshaft after installing the 4 degree shims on top of the little shimmed leaf that came on their leafs.

Yep. Different for every Jeep. People will send you pics of graphs and such but simply its not that easy. you have no doubla cardan joint so the graphs show that the driveshaft angle of the tcase and the driveshaft angle on the pinion should be roughly the same. Which is not true when you are dealing with a lifted vehicle. For SYE the pinion driveshaft angle should be close to zero. But i am living proof that its not always the truth. My pinion angle is almost zero with no SYE, no double cardan driveshaft and somehow I have no vibes. I know another guy with an XJ taht has the pinion set up like mine and has no vibes. From the video it looks like you should get maybe 6 degree shims. That will rotate your axle tough so be prepared to cut and reweld your shock mounts. Otherwise one will be too short and the one on the other side will be too long.
