Default Please explain wheel backspacing???

I am getting ready to order some wheels for my xj. I am wanting black D window or soft 8 style. 15x8. I have a 2 inch puck and shackle lift. I want my wheels to set out a little wider, for a better stance. The big question is. For a wider footpath do I need a 3.75 BS or 4.75BS.. The guy at summit says the smaller number is for a wider offset. I really thought it was the opposite. I am going this route for future larger lift and 31x10.50s. Currently running brand new BFG ATS 235x75. Please help

Backspacing is the measurement from the backside of the rim to wheel mounting surface

So in effect, the smaller the distance... the wider the wheel will set?

Yes because less of the wheel will be tucked in the fender.

I think you pretty much already got it, but this may help to understand some more.

So along the same lines.......is a 3.75 BS too much w/ a 4.5" lift or with any lift for that matter? I guess what I'm asking is.....is there more stress put on the front end with a 3.75" BS as opposed to 4.5" or even 4"?

I run a 4.5" lift, 31" tires, 15x8" wheels, 3.75" bs seems just right.
