plastic bgas tank swap for leaking metal tank?

now i've been lookin around and can find nothing about this, although i feel like it has been done plenty of times before...

I have a 94 xj and the gas tank leaks gas from around the fuel pump area.. so i assume the seal in there is shot. i was just going to RTV around that for now, but i couldn't help but wonder... could i put a plastic tank from a newer xj in? i know it would bult right up and fit the same... but would i have any problems with attatching the fuel pump electrical and whatnot? because from what i know, the fuel pump/delivery system is different....

and im really sick of having o fill up only 3/4 of a tank so tht i dont reek of gas lol :sweatdrop:

why dont you just replace the seal? rockauto.com has a new lock ring with gasket for $3.23 plus shipping...

i thought about it, and it might be a good temp fix, but i liike the idea of a plastic gas tank better, im in wester mass, the chances of my gas tank rusting out are moreso than others..

not easily enough. completely different fuel pump assembly/ sending units. you might be able to play with the wiring. but it varied quite a few times through the years. id just get a metal tank. chances are itll outlast the rest of the cherokee anyway. and the o ring is easy to replace if thats all it is. you dont even have to drop the tank

The metal and plastic tanks have different mounting straps too IIRC

turns out its leaking from like all over (the back right portion of it is like drenched if i fill it up alot :( ) so im assuming it probally rusted out.... my friend just gave me his plastic tank that he had put into his 96 with no problems other than the fuel guage not working... i was thinkin of tryin it out, but ill hafta look at them and determine if atleast i could cut some wires and work some magic...

but ill hafta give my local JY a call, if the price of a tank is reasonable, i may just go snag one of them.
