Stroke it, supercharge it, 63mm bored throttle body, new cam and lifters, header, 2.5" high flow exhaust, ported head, Volvo 746 injectors or Dodge 784 injectors...
That's about it.
That's about it.

Stoker. Only way to get decent gains while remaining naturally aspirated. You can run pump gas and will only lose 1-2mpg. Done right it can be in the 270hp and 320ft-lbs torque range.

For starters a complete tune-up and I mean "Complete" would go a long way, including all fluid changes and always use good filters (Wix) IMHO. Starting with the oil/trans/transfer case/ ft-rear differentials/ using syn's in what you can. Using quality parts for the tune-up takes more time because so much of it is made in China junk.
New and better injectors will help as a bored throttle body when the other items are finished. So many people want to start at the top of the food chain for performance and then wonder why it really didn't help. When they have neglected the real basic's on which everything is built from. In the beginning the one thing to remember is to "KISS" then one step at a time.

Lol
Id start with a cai and cat back for now, thall give u at least 20 hp.
Then go with a compound blower set up. 2.5 vgt feeding a 2.8 solid fin
You may need some spray to spool the 2.5 but thatll carry into the 2.8
Then you hit the 120 shot and can literally climb walls like spiderman provided you have big enough tires to not blow them off into a cloud of sexy melted rubber death.
Just kiddin OP
Go through you rig with a fine tooth comb. Start with a basic tune-up like others have said and start from there. The late 4.0 was an impressive motor for its day but dont expect it to hold hands with a modern 4 banger and towing anything beyond a tiny 6x8 trailer loaded light is gonna **** off your drive train.
