Default Offroad basics?

Ok so i was reading the "Snorkel" thread and it seems to have taken a different turn. We all seem to take our XJs offroad and get them in some "fun" places. ie, mud up to our rockers, water over our hoods, and sand in itchy places. So I thought I would start a thread where ppl could list those things that we need to do or dont think about. ie:

Breather tubes
Snorkels
a tow chain.

We all know we need lifts and good tires but I am talking about those cheap modifications that are seldom talked about or just mentioned in the middle of a thread someplace. So post them up here please.

When a chain breaks it can be pretty severe it will whip in any direction when a strap breaks it just drops

Because they'll kill you.

If someone is using a chain you won't see me standing anywhere near it.

If using chains, at least use something like this.

Edit- but agreed with lowrange. There's a reason straps exist!

i have had straps break before, they defintly didnt just drop. they whipped out and towards the vehicles. they arent carrying a whole lot of energy but it was enough to sling it over the top of my jeep but not enough to hurt someone. and just to clearify my straps do not have hooks.

i c Thank you for the info. i have used straps in the past and chains. had some 12k straps but they either broke or disappeared.. This is what i was hoping to get out of this thread. some useful info that noobs or not as experienced (like myself) to the community may not know. Info that we all should be given before hitting the trails.

for instance i knew that i wanted/needed a snorkel for those creek crossings i like to do. But i never thought about the axle, transmission, or engine breather tubes. Anything else that a noob should consider before hitting the trails?

In addition to no-chains, no metal hooks on your straps. Some people will flat-out refuse to pull you out using metal hooks.

-3 MRE's
-straps
-high lift jack
-air compressor

I don't think chains whip as much as cable, but people winch with steel cables ALL the time. Chains aren't the end of the world, just don't over load anything. Keep all gear well maintained and be well-informed when it comes to working load limits and breaking load limits. I love my chains, especially since I can choose any specific length I want.

In an ideal world, everything would be synthetic rope-like lol
