Default NP242 SYE

Hello All - Sorry for the new post on this topic. I have been searching around but just not finding the answers im looking for. Going to be lifting my 2000 XJ this spring 4.5 inch RC lift and trying to gather all necessary info and parts to bang it out all at once.

I am quite confused about the SYE for the 242. Im reading some post that hack and tap, and some that are getting a new main shaft and rear drive shaft. I guess my question is what is the best way to do this? I found this site which after the core charge on the old main shaft would be $450 for the kit and drive shaft? Anybody using this set up? Anyone have other suggestions? Seems like if I did the hack and tap I and had a new drive shaft custom made would be right about the same price. But That was using RE parts. Are there other options which might save me a couple bucks with out sacrificing quality? Any suggestions or Ideas would be of great help

Thanks
Jared

drop transfer case brackets is a nother option also a couple of bucks can be saved using a front shaft from a nother xj might not even need to be lengthend to fit after hack and tap or new shaft if you can install you own lift you can install the hack and tap or the shaft yourself

Unfortunately for those of us with 242 tcases, they do not make a new output shaft style SYE. It's hack-n-tap or you have to swap in a 231 to go the new output shaft route. I went with the RE hnt setup, and just pulled a front driveshaft out of an auto trans XJ and replaced all ujoints and rebuilt the double cardan joint. I'm running a 4" lift and I have plenty of driveshaft play even fully drooped in the rear.

Thanks guys! Pretty much the same stuff I've been reading about the 242 tcase. So last night I remembered I knew a guy, a close friend of a close friend, who runs his own drive shaft shop!! Hit him up Nd he's going to hook me up!! So hack and tap is going to be my solution!! :-). I'll let y'all know how it works out! He's based in boulder CO. If anyone is in need, im sure he'll appreciate the bus

x2 on that, i did the same thing, hack n tap with refurbished front shaft, fairly easy install. plenty of play with 8". When grinding the shaft, have the car running and in neutral to get the shaft spinning slightly, this will give you a straight cut

obviously make sure to put blocks on the wheels and practice good grinder safety (no loose clothing, grinder shield in place, gloves, glasses etc)

So Im now thinking about just going to the JY to get a front drive shaft, and just getting a hack and tap kit form RE for $100. My only question is, how dose the CV joint connect to the drive flange that is the RE SYE kit? The iron rock kit actually comes with a yoke, not a flange. Guess I question if I can run a stock front drive shaft with the RE kit being a flange, not a yoke?

Yes you can. I did. I had the same doubts though when I was looking at all the parts, thinking how in the heck does this hook up? Once you get the flange on, it will become obvious to you. I would recommend at least getting new driveshaft ujoints for your JY shaft.
