Hi guys, just bought a Cherokee with a 4.6 stroker motor. This breather on the back of the valve cover - circled in red - was not connected to that hose when I got it. I just connected it. What is that breather ( so I can replace it and fix the leak ) and should I leave that disconnected?

That ventilates gases from your valve cover back into your intake to be combusted. It is a good thing to have and the part prcherokee posted is what you need to replace it. Destroy the old one to remove it and replace the grommet too.

Gotcha. With that plugged back in, the Jeep wont start. So, it's unplugged for now til I replace it.

fyi dont use vacuum hose or non-oil compatible rubber hose like you have there the oil will eat at it and it will get sucked shut with engine running and stall it...ask me how i know...lol

I don't think that's where that hose goes... at least not on my 96. it goes to a little "nipple" on the air box.

2000 that is where it goes.
The question is, Why would that prevent the engine from starting?

rofl, I didn't realize it was going to the intake. at a quick glance, it looked like it was on the end of a stud directly on the unibody. Derp.

yeah, gave me a little scare when it wouldn't start. I forgot that I connected that at first so I was thinking the Jeep I just bought now wasn't starting. But as soon as I disconnected, started right up.

I assume it just because the breather is 100% plugged/broken.

I'll grab one from Napa tomorrow if they have one.

the stock PCV has a 90* bend
it was probably broken off and he "fixed it"
any parts store $5.00, get a new surrounding gasket piece, too
mine was FUBAR trying to get old one out, it was dry and brittle
