Non-hack-n'-tap SYE for NP242?!

Hey all!

Been thinking of getting an SYE kit for the XJ. Its a 2000 Limited, so it came with an NP242. The issue is that I can't seem to find a kit that does not involve tapping into the stock output shaft.

I've searched this forum as well as Google to see if any non-hack-n'-tap kits were made for NP242's but wasn't able to come up with anything. Do these kits even exist? Anyone have any links?

Thanks!
George

They have them. Use Google again. They are pricey from the last time I checked.

Tom Woods makes them out of stock 242 output shafts. Cut down and re-splined to fit the 1310 type yoke.
$400 deposit for your stock shaft. plus $400 for the new one.

I have the 242 TC also. Been running the hack-n-tap for 3 years. No vibrations, no issues. Daily driver.

The Hack-n-Tap is really your only budget-friendly solution. I wasn't comfortable with the procedure for it, so I opted to swap the 242 with a 231. But I know I'll miss the 242. You could have a machine shop install it for you and it would probably still be cheaper than Tom Woods.

As far as I understand it (which, granted, isn't all that much), practically everybody with a 242 that needs a SYE goes with an HnT. You do not, however, hear a whole lot of whining about "oh man, everything was going great until my SYE failed."

It's scary to cut the output shaft and all, but, other than that, what's the problem with a hack'n'tap for you?

P.S. - 2000 XJ Limited brothers! WOOOOOOO! Do your seat warmers still work?

I have the np242 TC with a hack and tap SYE, and no complaints so far.

Tom Woods has a new kit that includes a 32 spline output shaft instead of the old 27 spline shaft. The kit includes a new output shaft, speedo gear, tailhousing and a 1350 driveshaft mounting flange.

The kit isn't on listed on the website but with a Tom Woods DS it's $750.00. If you want just the SYE kit, without the drive shaft, theprice on the SYE kit alone is $550.00.

Hack n tap is simple, cheap, and easy to do. OP why are you against it?

I have a slip yoke CV shaft in my Jeep. It works pretty well. Longevity is to be seen as I've only had it 1 year. No issues so far though. Look up Tatton Driveline

Step #1
Swap in an NP231.

Step #2
Order the SYE of your choosing.

Simple and far less expensive than screwing around with a 242.

I have the hack and tap on my np242, long arm lifted on 35's, mated to an 8.8 rear end. No vibes, daily driven,no issues whatsoever

I have the Tom Woods 242HD SYE and driveshaft combo. It's not cheap but it is the only way to keep your 242 without doing a HnT. You can always try the HnT and if you aren't happy reconsider. Sometimes I find it's cheaper just to pay more up front and be done with it.
