No 4 low!? HELP!
I have been having this problem lately. I had gotten my xj in 4low before, but now it won't work at all. it's an np242, and when I try to put it in 4low it seems like it doesn't reach all the way, I push it all the way back, even slam it if you will, nothing. And i'll put it in drive, it won't move at all, like the t-case is in nuetral, but when I put it back in park while in the 4low position, I hear grinding or binding sounds. What gives? please help me.

well your 4low is probaly not engageing like its supposed to< either youre gears are stripped or your 4low is not engaged all the way, did you put it in neutral when you attempted to get down in gear?

'I am going to jump in on this one. My 96 sort of has the same issue. Put it in nuetral and pull it in 4 wheel high and it works fine. If you put it in neutral and pull it down into 4 low it wants to grind. So 'I had this brilliant idea to shut the motor off then pull it down to 4 low. Well that worked.
But when 'I went to take it out of 4 low, it moved to 4 hi just fine but then would not budge back into 2 wd. After shifting it back down through 4 hi and low a few times 'I got it to move back to 2 wd.
Does this souind like the transfer case is going bad or is something out of adjustment?

this problem is still persisting. I adjusted the linkage a bit, and It now goes into all the other gears MUCH better. BUT, 4 low, I put into 4 low, drives like it was still in what ever gear it was in before, and then goes to neutral. If I put my jeep in park, it makes this loud high pitch winding noise. then a click. and it's all good. but still no 4 low. ugh.
