New rear bumper bracket Fab with fuel tank skid plate

So I fabbed these bumper brackets to build my own rear bumper. Posted here cause I don't have enough posts for the fabrication thread. Also made up my new fuel tank skid plate tact together for now.

Very nice. Reminds me of my gas tank skid. I took 1/8" sheet and skinned over the factory skid plate then welded to my 1/8" outer bumper bracket plates that sandwich the uniframe.

Yeah. I looked into butchering a skid plate from a Grand Cherokee but thought I could make a better one starting from scratch.

Very nice work! Can you post any dimensions on those bumper brackets? I’ve been driving around with a naked Jeep. I’ll be making some bumper brackets like that soon. I’d also like to use the stock bolt hole locations on the back.

Very nice to see someone with some good fab skills! That should get the job done.

Ok I've been busy. Work got in the way but I've made some stuff. The skid is done bit needs some paint got it dimple died. Helps with strength but really just wanted drain holes. As far as dimensions they are :
Sides 11.5x 24 inches. Bent it 90 at 2.5.
I made the bottom 33 inches wide.
The cut out I used a 1 inch thick piece of wood to give me that much clearance from the bottom of the tank.
I drilled and mounted the sides and scribes them with th

I also made these extra large mobile jack stands. They will hold the frame 2 feet above the floor so I can sit on a chair and weld the frame stiffeners up. I'll be stripping out the engine, trans, and transfer case this weekend.

This is why I made the stands.

For what it is worth, I have a similar plan for an aluminum skid plate that will look much like yours, however that project is down the road a ways

Sweet skid plate and frame jacks, very creative

Please keep sharing your build

I'm thinking it should be moved to the build area but admin. Has to do it. I got this far yesterday with the frame stiffeners.

I ground the spots to weld then painted it with Steel It. However after thinking about it im not doing that any more since the backside of the frame stiffener isn't sprayed so as long as I weld it tight and then paint it it should be fine for rust.

EvanM 03-30-2020 10:54 PM

What's steel it?

Use weld thru primer on the backside of the stiffeners. These are just a few options...prices vary.
