New guy trying to get a xj to lift!
So I am a ford guy, but I love the capabilities of a jeep, and since school bills, and gas prices forced me to sell my F150. I bought a lil celice for a DD and I want a XJ to go play at the river.
I found this Xj for $1,000. 250k miles, bed linered, few dents, 2 rear bumpers, interior seems in good shape, needs new blinker, has new BFG 30' all-terrains and rims. The bedliner clearly needs some attention.
So basically is it worth $1000? In your opinions?

I have a DD for mpg. I am expecting 10-12 once I put 33's under it. Its a 92. As she sits I assume 16ish mpg? I know almost nothing about jeeps. I am having to learn as I go. What lift do you recommend? and how much for 33's?

One way to look at it is that those tires and wheels are worth $1000 brand new..
It's probably fair at about $1000, but I definitely wouldn't pay more. I see a big coil spacer in the front, it's probably just a cheap budget lift in the rear as well; however, this may suit your needs just fine if you are just going to play around in rivers, etc, you don't require a bunch of flex, and you don't expect anything out of the ride characteristics. for a bush wagon it seems good.
For me, a lot would also depend on the condition of the engine

I recently bought two xjs for 1000$.. one was an auto that ran great till we got it about halfway home... then it started having all kinds of problems. Ended up having to replace vacume harnesses, wheel bearings, exhaust, all the u joints, brakes, distributor, valve cover gasket... anyways my wife blew the engine about a month later when a radiator hose just snapped as she was driving home. She thought the steam she was seeing was from the snow/slush lol.
The second one I bought from a family member... it is in great condition, manual, and has 0 problems...
My point being before you buy it, look it over very well. Check for rust (floorboards can be a pain to cut out and replace.. check under carpet) major oil leaks (although the person probably degreased it before trying to sell) , make sure everything works. If you can, jack it up under the control arms and check ball joints, steering, and wheel bearings for any play\ bad noises. Even if the tires are worth close to 1000$, It sucks digging into a POS that has endless problems. Both of the ones I bought look much better cosmetically than that one and one was good, one was shot.
Another thing to consider is that if it is already lifted/dented, it was probably beat to hell. I have found it is much better long run to find a stock one and build it up yourself.
That being said, if you do get it and find problems, send me a PM... I have plenty of new parts for an 89 that I would not mid getting rid off I will probably part it out here on the forum soon.

As for gas millage, 10-12 seems a little low. Even with a 6.5" on mine, I still get around 15. My first trip with it (from MT to LA) I averaged 24. Then again, I bought it with only 20k on it.

p.s. Both of the ones I bought for 1000$ were under 180K. My 99 I paid 4500 for with 20K on it. I would say try to talk him down if you are dead set on getting it.

It's one of those thing I'm trying not to jump onto the first one I find. I want to build one myself so this one fit the bill and was cheap. My budget is tight I'm only 17 and want a beater not a money put that won't stay running, which is why I chose a xj their tough as ****. They seem to be costly around me I guess people are proud of what they have lol. I definatly haven't made a definite decision to go get it. Personally I like bedlined he just did a crappy job and I figure I could sand it and redo it correctly.
Do you think it's lifted? It looks stock to me.

Looks like it has a huge *** coil spring spacer up front in your 4th pic down. My guess would be 3".
And that'd be a $600-800 jeep around my parts.

anyone notice side view mirrors in pic #2 are from a 97+? lol
that whole jeep looks clapped out. I'll bet the engine is as beat as the exterior. I'd ask him what the junk yard would pay him for it. then I'd offer him that amount. then worst case, you can just take it to the junk yard and break even. looks like he ruined a nice little jeep

Call them and ask every question you can think of. Make a list first, look through the OEM section here for ideas.
If it still interests you, make sure you allow enough time to give it a good look over and a very thorough test drive when you make the trip.
Around here, if it has 4wd and runs, you won't get it for less than $1000.
