Default New guy differential questions

Hi, I'm Don from the Florida/Alabama line. I have a 96 Cherokee Sport, with a D30 front end and Chrysler 8.25 rearend. I have 3.55 gears and am wanting to go lower. I have picked up an old 70's model J series pickup that has a D44 on the front end and I don't know what on the rear. I am told it has 4.10 gears in it and the rear is a locker. I do not recognize the rear end. It does not look like a dana. It has the shape of the 8.25 but much bigger. Where can I go to in order to find out how many spline axles it has and what the rearend is?
Thanks, Don

if it came stock with the truck im pretty sure they only came with Dana rear axles..

you could always pull the shafts and count the splines, or posting a pic if you have one would help

i would also ask if the previous owner installed the 4.10 gears because im sure they didnt come with 4.10's from the factory

Maybe an AMC 20 or 30, possibly a Ford nine inch. Nine inch is comparable strength to a Dana 60 (I think)

It's either a AMC 20 (J10) or Dana 60 (J20). The Model 20 is a fairly strong axle if you put one piece shafts in it and weld the tubes to the housing.

Thanks folks, Looks like it's going to be the amc 20. Now, what would be involved in putting it in my cherokee? Or is it not feasable to do so? The wheel bolt pattern is not the same.

amc 20 in the back is easy...grind off old spring perches and shock mounts. weld on new ones in correct locations.

the front 44 will take a little more work and money, as you will need all new control arm mounts and spring perches. and if im not mistaken, isnt that d44 a passenger drop?

bolt pattern wont be that big of a deal as long as you swap in the front 44 also. you can just use the wheel off of the truck if you needed.
