Need to rebuild rear end upgrade?
The rear end in the 99 is about shot and is needing a rebuild. I was wondering what type of upgrades are recommended? I do mild offroad, mostly a pavement pounder but definately get nasty weather where I'm at so traction would help a lot. I don't really see the need for a full air locker, and have heard the lunch boxes aren't real good for the street? Just trying to get some real world opinions?! Thanks

Well first is it a turdy five or 8.25? And what's your tire size? If its a 8.25 then you could rebuild it and add a aftermarket LSD or factory. If its a d35 then you could maybe rebuild since you don't off road much but better off with a direct swap 8.25 or a 8.8 with modifications

Sorry it's an 8.25, probably go nonhugher than 31's on tires. Zj disc conversion already done and loving it! As far as fab skills on a scale of ten I rate myself an 8. What's a good LSD or lunchbox that is very streetable. Love the idea of an Aussie or equivalent but don't see the need to spend the extra coin. Thanks folks!

Yeah the 8.25 is a very decent axle for size/ wieght. I have an aussie, and off road it's worth every penny. The clicking is barely noticeable while taking a turn unless the radio is off and I tell someone to listen for it. Now you have to keep in mind you just cant turn your wheel and hammer the go pedal on wet pavement or it will try to come around on you, but you learn how to drive with it.

I plan to but since im tearing it down i might as well upgrade, i don't like doing things multiple times. Just looking for real world results from different upgrades people have done.

That was my mistake I was saying no Aussie but was thinking of something else. That was one that has been a thought throwing around. Mines am auto so the transition while shifting should be pretty smooth. Are they pretty quiet compared to the say the spartan?

If you already have an 8.25 and already put the effort in for the disc conversion, rebuild that sucker.
What exactly is wrong with it that you're convinced it needs "rebuilt"?

Oh 31s with discs already? Find a donor and swap the guts, or get another 29-spline and move your stuff over. Not really much benefit for effort going another route.

If it is just mainly a driver and mile off roader than maybe look at an auburn lsd, or truetrac limited slip. You would never know either of them were there but they would both provide great traction. Even a NO-slip for a lunchbox as its a bit smoother but gets full traction when locked.
