Default Need help with boot release

Hey guys I tried having a search but didn't know what I was searching for.

I have an XJ 2001
The boot release arm thing(shown in the picture below) isn't moving when I pull it up or push it down. So I can't get me boot open. It won't budge

Is the rod actually in the claw clamp? Does not look like it in your picture.

Brokkysopp, your boot isnt working because the rod is not connected to the clip as shown by Ralph77. See if the rod pops back into place.

No I released the rod from the housing but that's not the issue. The issue is the rod can't be moved up or down woods to release the locking mechanism. Handle is broken and I just want to open the boot(we call it a boot in au) so I can clean her out

So I am thinking pulling up, or pushing down, (can't remember which) on the brass/bronze piece in there should release it.
